Marcus Wheelhouse is a former professional golfer, now one of New Zealand’s leading teaching professional at JK’s World of Golf and Akarana golf club.
Marcus started playing golf at just 8 years of age and had a successful career.
Ranked the Number One Amateur Golfer in the world in 1995, Marcus was awarded Auckland Sportsman of the Year that year. As an amateur Marcus won 31 amateur tournaments including successfully defending the New Zealand Stroke play Championship in 1993 and 1994.
He was a member of the successful New Zealand Eisenhower Trophy Team of 1994 and enjoyed overseas success too, winning six overseas tournaments including the Malaysian Amateur Tournament and the prestigious Lake Macquarie Championship in Australia.
Marcus turned professional in January 1996 and was named Rookie of the Year on the Australian Tour. He then played in Europe on the Challenge Tour for five years before playing on the nationwide and mini tours in the USA for another few years before injury ended his playing career.
Beginning a new chapter in his life, Marcus returned to New Zealand in 2007 and started teaching the game he loves and now is a AAA NZPGA member.
Marcus started the Wheelhouse Golf Academy in 2015 to nurture talented young players to fulfil their dreams both in golf and in life. In 2017 he won both the Prime Minister Scholarship for Coaching and the 2017 NZPGA Coach of the Year.
Marcus is also the Auckland Golf Coach for both the men and ladies teams responsible for the 35 player squad and their programme.
He is a Titliest advisory staff member for Acushnet Worldwide and been with this company for over 20 years.
Marcus had 4 years of representing the New Zealand tour players on the board of the NZPGA.
He is also a television golf presenter / commentator having been the ‘on course’ commentator for the NZ Open on Sky TV. He appears regularly on the Holden Golf Show on Sky and spent over four years hosting a weekly radio show with legend broadcaster, Brendan Telfer on Radio Sport.
He also has a ‘Monthly Tips’ column in NZ Golf Magazine.
Based at JK’s World of Golf by the airport and the head coach at Akarana golf club Marcus hosts corporate golf days, holds golf clinics and provides expert coaching and advice to golfers of all levels. From beginners to recreational golfers, to some of New Zealand’s top amateur players and professionals.
Marcus is married to Melodie Robinson and has two young children, Jenson and Freddie.
